"[This] is one of Ms. Frank's more fully realized works, however, the
drawing loses none of her startling power of evocation despite its relative
graphic completeness. The pose is reminiscent of that of Lautrec's Clowness, but
unlike the Clowness this girl is all innocence and grace. Her open robe is less
lascivious than artless, in [this drawing] Frank employs a playful line
characteristic of her portrayal of youthful subjects, her treatment of hair
projects extraordinary energy and movement. The viewer feels impelled toward a
vision of a young woman actually observed in the act of combing her hair.
"In contrast to the feeling of languor projected in Reclining Figure, and the
static tension of Girl With a Cat, this piece conveys free and graceful movement
in a mood of utter unself-consciousness."
-- Lyman Balmuth, writer for the Village Voice and the Boston Globe
